Overview:

The Graduate Professional Diploma in Teaching program is offered by the Department of Education. The program aims to qualify bachelor's degree graduates who wish to join the teaching profession. It also contributes in improving the qualifications of teachers who are working in the field of education and developing them educationally. The general objectives and outcomes of the program are derived from the basic educational knowledge and skills that the teacher must have in light of the most recent relevant demands and the international standards.

Program Mission

In accordance with the university’s vision and philosophy as well as the mission of the College of Humanities and Sciences, the Department aims to prepare and train teachers for the intermediate stage (6-8) and the secondary stage (9-12)

The Program Goals:

The Graduate Professional Diploma in Teaching gets its goals from the program’s mission, which reflects the educational philosophy that the University adopts. The program’s goals are as follows:

  1. To provide the learner with deep applied and theoretical knowledge of various educational fields
  2. To enable the learner to have new visions in various fields of the educational process
  3. To make use of the scientific research tools in solving problems encountered in the learning and teaching process
  4. To be able to apply the appropriate skills in analyzing curricula, designing lessons and using technology in teaching
  5. To acquire the basic professional competences and theories of critical thinking when solving educational problems
  6. To be able to scientifically discuss new and old educational issues
  7. To prepare a leading and qualified teacher who is effective in social communication and professional self-development in their field of interest
Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of the program, the graduate will be able to:

 1.Knowledge: 
  1. Demonstrate concrete theoretical knowledge in different educational aspects which enables the student to do their work successfully,
  2.  Create new ideas in the field of the specialization based on scientific thinking in solving educational problems
 2.Skills 
  1. Acquire the appropriate tools and skills to analyze curricula, design courses and perform them using technology,
  2. Use the scientific approach in thinking and making judgements far from emotions,
  3. Apply the fundamentals  and skills of scientific research in compliance with the  ethics of scientific research,  
  3.Competences
 Autonomy and Responsibility:
  • Take responsibility for solving educational problems facing them as an individual or as a team leader,

  • Suggest and develop individual and collective innovative projects in the field of scientific research related to the educational process,

  • Self-evaluate and take responsibility for contributing to professional learning and teaching practices.
Admission Requirements:

Applicants to the program of Graduate Professional Diploma in Teaching in the AU College of Humanities and Sciences should meet the following conditions:

  1. A score of no less than 1250 in the Arabic Language EmSAT,

  2. A score of no less than 950 in the English Language EmSAT or its equivalents from the national or international tests which are approved by the CAA, like TOEFL ITP (450) or Academic IELTS (4.5),

  3. A bachelor degree or its equivalent, and it should be recognized by the Ministry Education in the UAE. The degree must be related to the specializations offered by the College with an AGPA of no less than 3 out of 4 or its equivalent,

  4. Applicants with a recognized bachelor degree with 2.5 CPGA to less than 3 out of 4 or its equivalent will be admitted on a condition that: applicants may register up to 9 credit hours during the conditional admission period and must achieve the minimum GPA 3 out 4.

  5. Applicants with a recognized bachelor degree  with a CGPA 2.0 to less than 2.5 out of 4 or its equivalent will be admitted on condition that they may register up to 9 remedial credit hours and must get a minimum GPA of 3 out of 4.

Graduation requirements:
  • Graduate students are required to complete a total of 24 credit hours and a minimum of 3.0 GPA out of 4.0.
  • Graduate students should successfully pass 7 courses including the course of practical training and an optional course. The practical training course weighs 6 credit hours while all other 6 courses weigh 3 credit hours each.
Career Opportunities:
  • Teaching in secondary and high schools.
  • Working in institutions related to the areas of media, endowment (Awqaf) authority, Sharia courts, educational management, etc.

The Bachelor’s degree in Education – Teaching Mathematics and Sciences program is accredited by the Ministry of Education – Higher Education affairs. This program is provided in Arabic Language

Program Outcomes:
  1. To apply knowledge of mathematics, sciences and technology in education.
  2. To use basic concepts in education, psychology, teaching methods and curriculum design.
  3. To practise the knowledge of mathematics and sciences through differential, integral calculus and basic, necessary sciences.
  4. To practise the basic skills of computer, educational technology and internet efficiently to acquire and present mathematical and scientific knowledge to the learners.
  5. To become an independent teacher/learner that recognise the need for engagement in lifelong learning.
  6. To understand the professional and ethical responsibility for being a teacher of mathematics and science.
Admission Requirements:
  • A certified UAE secondary school certificate or its equivalent, with a minimum average grade 60 percent.
  • Passing an interview that is run by the college.
Graduation requirements:
  • Students are required to complete a total of 132 credit hours and a minimum of 2.0 GPA out of 4.0.
  • Students should successfully pass 42 courses. 
Career Opportunities:
  • Teaching in the elementary and secondary schools.
  • Working in institutions related to the areas of media, educational management etc.

The Arabic and Islamic Studies program aims at academically preparing a generation of graduates; holders of a college degree in Arabic Language and Islamic Studies who are able to participate in the enrichment of the intellectual, cultural and educational institutions in and out of the UAE. The program reflects the diversity and complexity of the Arabic/Islamic culture and civilisation. While studying Arabic Language and Islamic Studies, the students will learn about the linguistics and culture of Arabic across history. They will also learn about the teaching methodology of Arabic language and Islamic studies and using the educational technology and its applications. It helps students realise how Arabic language has grown over centuries. Arabic Language and Islamic Studies can set students off on many career paths; they can become lecturers or teachers. This field, in addition to the teaching profession, can help graduates join the fields of business, journalism, etc. Moreover, the program is introduced in Arabic and accredited by the Ministry of Education – Higher Education Affairs.

Overview:

The Program of Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) is a four-year accredited Bachelor Degree of Education in Teaching English as a Foreign Language.

Program Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of the TEFL program, graduates are expected to:

  1. Identify learning theories and various methods of teaching English as a foreign language.
  2. Show a broad, coherent knowledge of the fundamental concepts, principles and techniques of language learning.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of integrating technology and methods of teaching English including emerging trends in the field of educational technology.
  4. Demonstrate effective communication skills using English orally and in writing to present ideas and engage in meaningful interaction.
  5. Employ high-level thinking skills in lesson planning, lesson execution and evaluation of the teaching and learning processes.
  6. Implement research skills in data gathering, data analysis and presentation of results to identify and solve field related problems.
  7. Show independent decision making on handling learning difficulties and classroom management problems and come up with appropriate solutions.
  8. Interact with peer colleagues, qualified cooperative teachers and school administration in different situations.
  9. Apply ethical standards to the teaching/learning practice.
  10. Use positive criticism and feedback on their learning/teaching performance to inform their approaches to professional development.
Admission Requirements:

To be admitted to the TEFL Program, each applicant should have a certified UAE secondary school certificate, or its equivalent, with a minimum average grade of 60 percent. In addition, the applicant should hold an English proficiency certificate with a minimum score of 500 for TOEFL or 5.0 for IELTS. Admission is also dependent upon the successful outcome of an interview during which the applicant’s academic, physical, personal capabilities for joining the teaching profession are assessed.

Graduation Requirements:
  • The completion of 129 credit hours listed in the study plan.
  • Cumulative GPA of at least 2.0.
